- Big Science is a broad epithet that can be associated with research projects as different as the Manhattan Project, the Hubble Telescope- construction, and the CERN-establishment in Geneva. While the science produced by these projects is vastly different, they have in common the fact that they all involve huge budgets, big facilities, complex instrumentation, years of planning, and large multidisciplinary teams of researchers. In Legitimizing ESS the authors examine the complexity of the cultural, social, and political processes from which and in which Big Science develops. They do so by focusing upon the planning and development of the European Spallation Source, ESS, that is to be located in Lund in southern Sweden. Together, the chapters represent a variety of perspectives to highlight the complexity of the processes that are integral to Big Science. Thus, this volume examines the very different roles Big Science may be given in different contexts: locally, regionally, nationally and internationally, as well as historically. Legitimizing ESS is based on the research of scholars based at Lund University from the disciplines of archive and library sciences, art history and visual studies, ethnology, gender studies, geography, history of ideas and sciences, media and communication, philosophy, and policy research. --- Big Science är ett brett begrepp som kan förknippas med så skilda forskningsföreteelser som Manhattanprojektet, Hubbleteleskopet och CERN. Trots att den vetenskap som bedrivs vid dessa anläggningar är väsensskild har de det gemensamt att de kräver stora resurser och stora anläggningar liksom sofistikerade och dyra instrument, stora tvärvetenskapliga forskarlag och många års planering. I Legitimizing ESS undersöker författarna de komplicerade kulturella, sociala och politiska processer som ligger till grund för uppkomsten och utvecklingen av Big Science. De gör det genom att fokusera på förberedelserna av European Spallation Source, ESS, som planeras att byggas i Lund. Tillsammans representerar kapitlen olika perspektiv som frilägger hur olika processer samverkar i skapandet av Big Science. Denna bok handlar med andra ord om de olika roller som Big Science kan spela i olika sammanhang: lokalt, regionalt, nationellt och internationellt såväl som historiskt. Legitimizing ESS är baserad på vetenskapligt arbete av forskare vid Lunds universitet från ämnesområden som biblioteks- och informationsvetenskap, konsthistoria och visuella studier, etnologi, genusvetenskap, ekonomisk geografi, idéhistoria, media- och kommunikationsvetenskap, forskningspolitiska studier samt filosofi

- This anthology is about new big science, approached through perspectives from law, sustainability studies, sociology of science and technology, history, human geography and information studies. In focus are the two large experimental facilities being built in Lund: the European Spallation Source (ESS) and MAX IV. Put centre stage are the communities that launch, build, use, host, and benefit from these science facilities. New big science facilities are large in their physical footprints, their costs, and their ambitions. Expectations abound and are in constant production. This anthology captures the opportunity to study these complex science facilities in the making – at the juncture where expectations meet reality – asking questions about what possibilities, constraints, and risks these projects entail. This anthology is the outcome of an interdisciplinary research theme at the Pufendorf Institute for Advanced Studies at Lund University. The editors Josephine V. Rekers and Kerstin Sandell are both social scientists, affiliated with the Department of Human Geography and the Department of Gender Studies respectively.

- Konstnären och grafikern Kerstin Abram-Nilsson (19311998) drabbades 1997 av förlamningssjukdomen ALS, som är smygande och obönhörlig. Givetvis fick hon svårigheter att tala och äta, ibland också kväljningsattacker. Trots sviktande krafter forsatte hon att arbeta för en kommande utställning. Samtidigt skildrade hon sjukdomstiden i dagboksnotiser och teckningar, ofta med bister humor mitt i all förtvivlan.
Oron för den sista tiden, för döendet, gjorde att hon sökte möjligheter att själv bestämma sin död något som ännu inte är möjligt.
