PREFACE

In its Vestment Chambers, Uppsala Cathedral possesses a collec-tion of ecclesiastical textiles, both ancient and modern, which can justly be ranked among its finest art treasures. The history of this collection in its turn reflects the history of divine worship in Sweden. For much too long the Cathedral has lacked a catalogue which presents its textile vestments in a way useful to scholars, giving a detailed description of the objects with historical determinations.

The filling of this gap through the present work is an occasion for deep satisfaction and also of gratitude for the devoted interest of all those who have contributed in various ways to the completion of the project. I wish to acknowledge the indebtness of the Cathedral to Dr Agnes Geijer, the eminent expert who has lavished so much care upon the collection and who has prepared this account, to Knut and Alice Wallenberg Memorial Foundation which by generous grants for the care of the collection has helped to make this work possible, and also to Messrs. Almqvist & Wiksell, the printers, who have been at considerable pains and financial sacrifice to give the book a form worthy of its contents.
